Rare, out of print books published primarily between 1820 and 1912 as well as manuscripts, maps and prints are housed at the Center. The rare book collection has more than 300 items in four main languages: Chinese, Japanese, English and Spanish. It includes some 50 volumes of rare Chinese-language books printed before 1911. It also has Chinese rubbings, most of which are from albums of calligraphy in ancient Chinese art from the eighteenth to nineteenth centuries. The most notable item in the collection is a Japanese music manuscript dating from 1136.
