The Eide Center Orchard Tour and Arboretum Tour

Through May 5th, 2021 the Eide Center is hosting a historic orchard tour beginning at 10 AM. This tour group is sold out. We have offered the renamed, “Arboretum Tour” through May 26, 2021 due to popular demand. This tour group will begin one hour earlier, at 9:00 AM, due to the warmer weather. The name has been changed to avoid further confusion with the extremely popular and well-known Selby Gardens “Orchid Tour”. The tours are the same, other than the name and time change. We hope to see you here!

THE EIDE CENTER ORCHARD TOUR AND ARBORETUM TOUR DESCRIPTION:

A 60-minute guided tour through the Eide historic arboretum exploring the geologic history of Florida and how it relates to the evolution of plant life with living examples. Dr. Oliver Mitchell Sr., the grandfather to Elling O. Eide, purchased this land in 1935, and over the years the Mitchell and Eide families planted rare and interesting plants from around the globe. The Eide site contains seven historically significant structures, along with a modern library building.

This unique outdoor tour will be led by Eide volunteer Norman Burr. Norman has a diverse and eclectic background with advanced degrees in geology and geophysics. Norman worked as a docent for 20 years at two distinguished Santa Barbara botanical gardens and taught botany courses at a community college. Most recently, Norman volunteered at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum in Washington, DC as a docent in human origins and he also worked in paleobotany and meteorites.

Tours will be limited to 10 participants*. Donations are appreciated. Tour days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Please wear appropriate hiking shoes and attire.
